I think the events of the past 10 years have really ignited something dark and feral in our southern Neighbours. 10 years ago, there was a smug confidence in their step, borne of having won the cold war, and 10 years of peace.
Not so now.
There were suggestions to impeach Bush for war crimes. The people were dissapointed when they did not see Osama Bin Laden's corpse. The Obama Birthers are determined that they have struck Barack's legitimacy to the core.
It hearkens back to movies about the old wild west, where the Sherriff would bring someone out, and the shout to "String him up" would be heard. And that is exactly what the USA wants to do. They want to have a lynch mob, they want to hoist someone up and watch them hang. They want a body, and they are hell bent to provide themselves with one, no matter who it is.
This is potentially very dangerous, not only for the USA, but, for the world as a whole. We must all tread very carefully about who we identify as the antagonists in this world.

Luckily for the rest of the world, the USA does have a bloodthirsty streak. We are terrible when riled up - ask the people of Hiroshima. And thank god we are, or you'd be speaking Japanese, German, Chinese, and/or Russian instead of Canuckian.
Well, I am left wing, hell, I'm pretty much as socialist as they come. However, I am not anti-American. Quite the opposite, I will happily tease you guys once in a while, but, I realize that the world would be worse off without you guys on the table.
Thats why I'm making an impassioned plea right now - just please, take a look at yourselves. You can be so much better, you can be magnificent! And you can be again.
You are very hurt right now, and its okay. But, there comes a time when you have to let the hurting stop.

America has always been a bloodthirsty nation. It goes back to the old days when settlers were scalping indians and getting reward money. What's changed is that since WWII, America has a feeling it was on a divine mission and it's capitalist system a gift from god. That's what drove America through the cold war years. Since the cold war years ended, America has lacked the good guy/bad guy story to give it a feeling it was more than just another empire. The war on terror was supposed to be another great crusade for America to cast itself as the good guy, but it hasn't worked out that way. GITMO has made the USA look just like the old Soviet Union with its use of detention without charges. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan has been marked by atrocities and horrors like Abu Grahab. These wars were supposed to be "cakewalks", but they've dragged on for years and cost billions. America is adrift now. The USA has an eroding way of life, an overstretched military, and a population that is scared shittless as its power and wealth withers. The only hope is that as the idiot baby boomers die off, more moderate and enlightened leaders will emerge. As the GOP decends into tea party driven madness, we might be seeing this happen already.

America has lost its place in the world. There are better workers to exploit in the third world and better consumers to target elsewhere, as the average American is tapped out. So there is nothing left for the capitalists to chew on. As such, the system is collapsing.
